Bridge Railing
Bridge rail, tubular thrie beam, and retrofit work across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware & Maryland.
Bridge Railing Installation & Retrofit
Bridge railing is one of ML Ruberton’s core service lines alongside guiderail — our crews install new bridge rail systems and retrofit existing structures to meet current crash-performance standards.
Bridge rail work carries a different level of scrutiny than roadside guiderail, because the rail is anchored directly into the bridge deck and there is no shoulder or runoff area beyond the edge of the structure. That means anchorage and connection detailing has to be right the first time, whether we’re installing new rail on a bridge replacement project or retrofitting an older structure with a heavier-duty system like tubular thrie beam.
We work directly with state and county bridge programs as well as private and municipal clients across the Mid-Atlantic, and a large share of our bridge railing work comes from rehabilitation and retrofit contracts driven by bridge inspection findings rather than new construction alone. Explore each service below for more on how we approach new installation, retrofit, and repair work.
Our Approach To Bridge Railing
Every bridge railing job starts with understanding what the structure needs, not just what the plans call for on paper. On new construction, that means coordinating with the general contractor and structural engineer on sequencing so rail installation happens cleanly after the deck is placed and cured, without holding up paving and striping behind it. On a retrofit, it means assessing what the existing deck can actually support before committing to an anchorage plan.
Because our fabrication shop is in-house, non-standard rail sections, connection hardware, and repair components don’t have to wait on an outside supplier — a damaged section of bridge rail can be matched and fabricated to spec quickly, which matters when a structure needs to be brought back to full crash-ready condition. That combination of field experience and in-house fabrication is what we bring to every bridge rail project, public or private, across the Mid-Atlantic.
Timelines & Agency Coordination
Bridge railing timelines vary widely by scope. A standalone rail retrofit on an otherwise sound structure can often move on a compressed schedule compared to rail work tied to a full bridge replacement, where our sequencing has to follow the deck construction schedule set by the general contractor. On state and county bridge programs, our crews are used to working within lane-closure windows, weight restrictions, and inspection checkpoints set by the owning agency, and we build our project schedule around those constraints from the outset rather than treating them as an afterthought.
We also stay in contact with the bridge owner throughout a project — flagging any field condition that differs from the original plans, such as unexpected deck deterioration discovered once the old rail is removed, so decisions about how to proceed are made quickly rather than stalling the schedule while information works its way through multiple parties.

Yes — we install and retrofit bridge railing on state DOT, county, and municipal bridge structures across NY, NJ, PA, DE, and MD.
Often, yes. Depending on the structure and current standards, a retrofit that upgrades the existing rail system can be a practical alternative to full replacement.
Timelines depend heavily on the structure and scope — a rail-only retrofit on an otherwise sound bridge moves faster than new rail tied to a full bridge replacement — and we scope a realistic schedule as part of every proposal.
Yes — bridge rail anchorage and connection detailing is engineered, and our crews install directly from those structural plans, staying in close coordination with the engineer of record and general contractor throughout.
