W-beam guiderail is the corrugated steel barrier most drivers picture when they think of highway guiderail. It gets its name from the shape of the rail itself — a rolled steel section with a distinctive "W" profile when viewed in cross-section — bolted to steel or timber posts set at regular intervals along the shoulder or median. It is the workhorse roadside safety system on state and local highways throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, and it is one of ML Ruberton's core, highest-volume service lines.

The system works by redirecting an errant vehicle back toward the travel lane rather than allowing it to run off the road into a fixed hazard, a slope, or oncoming traffic.
