Overview

Sign panels are the individual reflective signs that give drivers speed limits, warnings, and route guidance — everything from a stop sign at a local intersection to a large guide sign on an interstate approach. Panels are built to standard shapes, colors, and legends set by national and state highway signage standards, using reflective sheeting so the sign remains legible to drivers at night under headlight illumination, not just in daylight.

Behind the standard appearance is a fair amount of engineering — sheeting reflectivity grade, panel gauge, and legend layout all have to match the sign's function and the speed of the road it serves. Guide signs on a limited-access highway need larger legends and longer sight distance than a local regulatory sign at a stop-controlled intersection, and getting that specification right is part of a properly executed sign panel project.

Reflective sheeting itself comes in several grades, each rated for a different level of nighttime reflectivity and a different expected service life — a sign for a low-speed local street doesn't need the same sheeting grade as a high-speed interstate guide sign relying on a driver's headlights from a much greater distance. Panel substrate matters too, with aluminum the standard choice for most highway signage because it resists corrosion and holds a flat, warp-free surface that keeps the reflective sheeting performing as intended over its service life.

How & Why It’s Used

Sign panels are installed on new roadway construction, as part of a roadway restriping or resurfacing project where existing signage needs to be updated or relocated, and as one-off replacements when an individual panel is damaged, faded past its reflectivity standard, or knocked down by a vehicle. Our in-house fabrication shop lets us produce custom or non-standard panel sizes and legends without waiting on an outside supplier's production schedule.

A significant part of ongoing sign panel work is retroreflectivity management — state and local agencies are required to maintain sign panels at a minimum reflectivity level, and panels that have faded below that threshold need to be identified and replaced as part of a routine sign maintenance program.
